Every year the American Heart Association holds different activities to raise awareness about heart disease, and to raise money for research, education, and more. The heart is very close to my heart, (pun intended), because it really is a very fragile organ. Being in Nursing School has made me realize in a lot of ways how we take our lives for granted, and how we often pay no attention to our health until it starts to fail, and by then it’s a downhill road. As I have done my clinical rotations on different floors several things have tweaked my interest, and made me become more aware of our bodies and the abuse we put them through until one day they give. Chief among those parts that have grabbed me and held me tight are our hearts, our kidneys, our lungs, and our livers… all vitally crucial organs. As part of me raising my own self-awareness and doing something about something I am thinking seriously about, I will be doing whatever I can to raise awareness about health preservation and maintenance, and I will begin heartily at the heart of the matter. To this end, I am planning to do the 2007 Heart Walk in a few weeks. It will be held in Camden, NJ on October 13, and I will be walking as part of the OLOL team, along with Mary and whoever else of my friends decides to join us all. It’s a 2.2 mile walk along the Delaware river, and I am crossing my fingers for a beautiful day.

You’re Making a Difference. Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the Nation’s No.1 and No.3 killers, claim more than 910,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $474 million in fiscal year 2004-05 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.
