On Perfect Weekends, Childhood Dreams, and Radishes

April 20th, 2008 · No Comments

So I had this weekend off - ALL weekend!! AND, Mary is feeling much much better! She’s actually eating and keeping most of the food down. I have no response to her poop comment in my last post, at least not one that I want everyone to see. PLUS, the weather was perfect! Nice and sunny. PLUS I had money in my pocket. Now that has all the makings of a GREAT weekend, doesn’t it?

And what to do on a perfect weekend but fulfill one of my childhood dreams, and that’s exactly what I did, I did something that I have wanted to do ever since I was a little kid - I went to a real live CIRCUS!! The Ringling Brothers “Greatest Show on Earth” circus is currently in Philly at the Wachovia Spectrum, and I was hoping to see it, but hadn’t thought too much about it.  On Saturday we were itching for something to do because the day was absolutely gorgeous.  After putzing around the City and getting some lunch in Chinatown, we decided to find interesting stuff to do. Initially the plan was to go to the Adventure Aquarium, but once we got there and saw how long the line was, that idea went “poof” into the wind. We turned right back around and headed for the city. I had mentioned the circus to Mary so she said to me “well, there’s a show at 3pm, let’s see if we can get tickets.” And we did. It was awesome. I was like a little kid, eating cotton candy (that stuff is waaaaaay too sweet), and taking pictures of everything that moved, or bellowed, or roared!!  Let’s just say even though it would probably have been more exciting if I had been a kid, it was pretty damn cool to actually see a live circus and it trumped all the circus shows I watched on TV growing up.

After all that excitement we headed back home, relaxed a little and then went out to see a movie. I picked “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”… I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. It was hysterical. If you haven’t seen it yet, I HIGHLY recommend that you see it.  It’s definitely on my DVDs to buy list.

I may have overdone it though because I had a hard time falling asleep, after all the visual stimulus of the day, and once I did fall asleep I had the weirdest dreams ever!

Today was a little more laid back. We had breakfast and then went shopping for seedlings to start our planting season. We’re growing stuff again this year. We haven’t decided whether we’re going to do some plots in the community garden, but we’ve started our back patio pots going. We have radishes, tomatoes, rosemary, hot peppers, sweet peppers, chives, basil, strawberries, beans, corn, onions, and scallions. We’re doing the onions, scallions, basil and corn from seed, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed on those. The other thing we want to plant this year is cilantro, but we couldn’t find seedlings today. If we decide to get some plots then ofcourse we’ll plant more stuff, but this is a good start.
